Home learning help!!

As part of this weeks home learning we have asked all the children to practice the times table they have been working on.   In year 3 we like to learn them in this order.  10x   2x    5x    3x    4x     8x

Here is the link to the computer game we love to use to help us get better at remembering them.

Incredible Internet

In computing, we have been learning about the internet.  We have been internet detectives and used search engines to answer topic questions.  We have talked about the reliability of the information too.
Here are the links to the videos that were great at explaining the different technical parts of the internet and the world wide web.

DO NOT ENTER!!! Crime scene?

Last Friday we came into school to find there had been an unexpected visitor in the Year 3 classroom.

There were enormous footprints on the floor!!  We made some observations and then wrote our initial thoughts down.

Later, we used our initial reports to help us write wanted posters with character descriptions on them.
Check out the fantastic work in our English books.

All through the day we made adults in school measure their feet against our evidence to rule them out of the investigation.

We had so much fun!

Does food help us feel a sense of belonging?

We loved sharing a vegetarian meal last week.  We looked at how people of all religions use shared meals to promote a sense of belonging.  We looked at how Sikh families take it in turns to cook a meal for everyone at the Gurdwara. We shared spiced chickpeas, lentil tarka dal, bombay potatoes, naan bread, popadoms and mango chutney.  We all agreed it was great to share a meal.

Remarkable RE

Our class have been fascinated this week to learn about Sikhism.  We had lots of questions and were really interested to learn about other customs.

We have been talking about "belonging" and we were all very confident about what we belonged to.  All of our class felt a strong sense of belonging to their families, the school and the world around us. Some children also felt really strongly about belonging to clubs too.  Did you know we have members of Brownies, Rainbows, Cubs, Badgers, Football clubs, Rugby clubs, gym clubs and martial arts clubs in Year 3?

We particularly loved exploring the Sikh religion and beliefs through the eyes of other children. Check out these videos.

The beginnings of Sikhism

The story of the donkey and the tiger

We looked at how Sikhs show a stong commitment and sense of belonging to their religion by wearing the  Ks. Click on the link below to watch the video.

The Five Ks

We also enjoyed looking at the Sikh artefacts especially the Five Ks.  See if you can recognise them and their significance from watching the videos above.

Big and friendly, but are they giants?

What a great start to Year 3.  Our class are big and friendly, but are they giants?

Our Maths this week involved lots of measuring in mm, cm and metres.  A few of our class even added their own BFG ears to their measurements!

In English we have been looking at The BFG by Roald Dahl.  Check out the portraits of him in our classroom and the Phizz tickiling similies we have written to go with them.

We have also written Whizz popping acrostic poems about the BFG.

If you worked with our artist friend Bridget Townsend last year, it is the #connectionsproject exhibition on Sunday 11am until 5pm at Dorchester Borough Gardens.  Come and see your artwork in a public exhibition. You may even bump into Bridget.

Welcome to Year 3

We are so excited to welcome you all back to school on Monday 5th September.  We are also very excited about teaching year 3 this year.

As you already know, we are Roald Dahl base.  We will be spending lots of time in the coming year exploring and enjoying his famous stories.

We are starting with the BFG.  I wonder how many of you have seen the new BFG movie at the cinema over the holidays?

We will still have English and Maths lessons everyday as well as an assembly, guided reading and active time.  We are also going to have a dedicated story time everyday too!

During the week we will also have two PE sessions.  During the Autumn Term these will be on a Wednesday and a Friday.  Please make sure you have your named PE kit in school on these days.

We will continue to have a topic theme each term in which we can explore all of our Science, History, Geography, Music, Design Technology and Art through.

Our topic for the Autumn term is called

Watch out for the curriculum map coming home in the first few weeks for more details.

Wicked world!

The children have loved learning about volcanoes, earthquakes and tornadoes!

Here are some examples of the work they have been doing.

 How fossils are formed.

       Layers of the Earth.
Learning about different types of mountain. Great presentation too!

Fantastic, clearly drawn diagrams of what is under our feet!

How volcanoes are formed. It was quite tricky to use all the correct vocabulary.

Sorting natural rocks into their 3 groups.

We added to our class map - the red triangles show the location of volcanoes we found out about when researching. You can't see in the picture but each volcano has a label to tell you its name and whether or not is it exsinct, dormant or active.

The long red lines show the 'ring of fire'. This is the most active place for volcanoes and earthquakes.

Natural dyes!

We have had an amazing week in Year 3 following and writing fantastic instructions.

We read a book where the main character discovered that blackberries dyed his hands purple. This got us thinking about what other plants do the same.

Using the internet we researched and make notes about different fruits and vegetables we could use to naturally dye materials different colours. Miss Walton then went shopping!

Have a look at the pictures below which show the steps we took to make our own dyes. The results were amazing! We predicted before we started what colours each vegetable would give us. None of us guessed that brown onion skins would give us a vivid orange colour!

We had to chop the beetroot and red cabbage. We had to peel off the brown onion skins. Then we had to carefully place the tea bags and turmeric into the water.

The mixtures had to be heated until the liquid boiled. Whilst they were heating, we tied up our material using elastic bands. We checked each others to make sure they were tied securely.

After leaving the mixtures over night, the next step was to sieve out the chunky pieces. We only needed to keep the liquid.

Our material in the dye - we left it for 15 minutes.

Then we hung them out to dry in the sunshine. When they were dry, we took off the elastic bands to discovered what patterns we had created.

These are just a few of the amazing results!
